Hi all!
As a new homebrewer I have been trying to make every style at least once. I'm intrigued with making a red lager. Anyone have experience with this style and can make suggestions?
I plan to use Red X malt as a base for my partial mash, topping with some dme for proper gravity. I was going to then use 1lbs of Rye Malt, I want a subtle complexity (use more? Less?) I figured I'd then use a crystal malt like Carafoam or Carared for 5%.
Some recipes I found had more diverse grain bill but I am assuming that is for color adjustment more than complexity (chocolate malt, roasted barley, etc)? My Red X should give me a nice red hue itself I assume.
Hops are tough, do I go Chinook and cascade for an American, or Fuggle and EKG for Irish? I do want a nice smooth character moreso then hoppy/fruity.
Lastly I was thinking a nice American lager strain regardless of hop bill. THANKS!
