    L17 no action

So just pitched the pack, no starter? That's underpitched for a lager. Not knowing your OG, so assuming just 1.050 5 gallon batch of lager, would need around 350 billion cells, the one pack is 200 billion on the day it was packaged and only drops more the older it gets. With the under...

What water to use to brew

This is a decent overview...if you go to the section on ions, it lists the key things you need to look for. Brewing Water

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed a Czech Pils on Memorial Day, pretty straight forward brew... Floor Malted Bohemian Pils, a touch of victory, a lot of Saaz and a little Sterling in whirlpool. WLP800. Nothing on deck for this weekend as heading to friend's beach house on Cape Cod, but ready to brew a dark Weizenbock.

When to know if yeast is stalling

Using Brewers Friend Yeast Calculator, a 1.094 gravity beer, assuming 5 gallon batch, would need almost 3 packs of dry yeast at the minimum pitch rate for an ale. Not sure if that would be different for pressurized ferment.

What water to use to brew

I started with tap water myself years ago, the beers were good, but not great. I finally decided to do a Ward Labs water test because my town's water report is always a year old and is an average mineral quantity of multiple tests over the year. It turned out that my local water had sodium...

What changes made your beer better?

It depends on the style of beer really. Calcium Chloride, Gypsum, Epsom Salt and salt are the 4 I use the most and a little baking soda if it's a dark beer as roast malts will drop pH, so banking soda will bring it back up some. I just brewed a Czech Pilsner this weekend, which should be...

What changes made your beer better?

Temp control and using RO water/water salts were the two biggest for me.

    Favorite of experienced brewers.

12+ years of brewing...lagers are definitely my favorite, especially a Schwarzbier, though a Czech Dark is a close 2nd.

    Ingredient Price Increases

Yeah that's the one I was talking about...I probably embellished a little on it's near NH, but it's definitely closer to New Hampshire than it is to Braintree thanks to Expressway traffic! But hey, all us South Shore people think anything north of Boston is New Hampshire. ;) There is a very...

    Ingredient Price Increases

Yeah like everything else, grain, yeast, hops etc have gone up in price. My LHBS closed a few years ago, not really due to a drop in customers, but due to an owner who wanted to save money by closing every store in his chain but the original one, in order to put the money into the brewery he...

Where to get liquid yeast online? (2024+ edition)

I second ordering directly from White Labs...they do two day air mail shipping in an insulated cooler. So shipping can be pricey, but if you order several strains to have on hand, it's worth it. Besides White Labs, I would stick to dry yeast in the summer months with Florida heat. Most...

    Tipping on Homebrew Supplies

Never tipped at my LHBS, but then again, most times I got everything myself...but I would bring a beer or two when going to the shop to share with them, so they got tipsy instead of tips.

How many styles of beer do you have

My fridge can hold 3 kegs, but I only have two taps set up. But always have a pipeline going. Dunkels Bock and Czech Amber on tap, Cream Ale cold crashing and waiting to go on, American Lager fermenting and a small batch of Perry aging and clearing slowly. Next week brewing an American...
