    Aging cider in oak barrels

Just wondering if anyone had an opinion on this, I love oaked ciders and found this on Adventures in Homebrewing and wanted to try it out as an experiment. Good idea, bad idea? http://www.homebrewing.org/5-Liter-Oak-Barrel_p_5167.html I know that sometimes you can get large barrels cheaper...

My confusion was that DME stood for dry malt extract...I'll do some research though

    Unicorn Blood

I like the sound of this. Couple questions since I'm a noob. What exactly is a 5 gallon portion of DME? Every recipe I've used gave me pounds. Also, would the extract last several batches? Thanks!

    Unicorn Blood

Anyone ever make this with Nottingham? Wanna try a 5 gal with it since I've got it on hand. Was going to go with 4 gal AJ and 1 gal black cherry

    Need help fast!

It should be fine. I believe the rule is 3 days before you add any more yeast. Did you cut down on the yeast when you divided 5 gallons to 1 initially?

Cyser/braggot/graff, let's be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing....

Something similar happened today while I was brewing a Graff. I was like damn I forgot to buy dme and then I looked at my jar of honey and just used that instead. Let's hope it turns out good!

Top off, ferment again, then carbonate?

As long as you didn't use an excessive amount of sugar (I use 3/4 cup per 5 gallon) you should be fine. Go ahead and crack one open if you want. I usually do just to make sure it's going smoothly. Usually takes up to 2-3 weeks for full carbonation.

Top off, ferment again, then carbonate?

As long as it's done fermenting and the alcohol level isn't too high you should be able to.

    Nottingham yeast not fermenting

Yall sound like such gentlemen lol. Anyways. I sprayed star San on it and it looks like it was the stopper. Replaced it and all is well. Looks like my pricy investment will live another day. Learned a lot from this thread guys so thanks and now I'll back off and maybe grab some popcorn if more...

    Nottingham yeast not fermenting

Great.... Well will it be okay or should I try to fix the leak now? Wish it was easy to see where the leak is coming from though...

    Nottingham yeast not fermenting

Yeah it's definitely fermenting. Still no airlock activity which I guess means a leak somewhere... :( Anyways. Are these weird brown things around the edges anything to worry about?

    Nottingham yeast not fermenting

Well that makes me feel a little better. There is foam at the top but still no airlock activity. And hopefully there isn't a leak because I don't know where it would be.... I'll give it another day and repitch with some yeast nutrient. Thanks!

    Nottingham yeast not fermenting

Hey guys, I'm sure this has been asked before but I figured I'd rely on the experts. I got this fancy dancy brew bucket and FTSs on eBay for a sweet deal and I'm trying cider for the first time. It's a Graff and everything is exactly the same except I used some WhiteHouse and Musselmans cider...

looking for someone to try my mead

Just wondering, but isn't shipping alcohol illegal? Not that I'm a whistleblower, go for it. I'm was wondering if homebrew was an exception. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew
