5 Tips For the Apartment Brewer

Wort chiller alternative: Get the smallest fountain pump, about $20 and put in in your sink. Fill the sink part way and use the pump to circulate the water. Dump the ice tray in at the end for quicker finish if ground water is too warm.

    Apartment brewing

did you check the stove plug? Kind of a pain probably, but it would be 220. A dryer is also likely to be 220!

    Safe Kitchen BIAB Pulley

Valid concern, IMHO. He did say he calculated vertical and horizontal forces, and I would note that they are substantial. With the angle in the picture (Slightly more than 150 degrees), the force on EACH side is TWICE the weight of the bucket! For his case, it probably is over engineered...

    Anybody up for a riddle?

I was too specific to be right, but I won't put up a fight. Mine are often too simple or obtuse, but lets see if you can deduce What it is that makes a homebrewer like tigger, so put on that cap and go figure

    Anybody up for a riddle?

I opened a bag of walnut halves, and counted out eight, and had a quartet of walnuts. But maybe my brain needs some salves, and the answer doesn't rate, and if so I'm just a bit nuts.

    Bark in mead?

Just makes me think of various 'teas' we made camping back when I was a kid. Took a quick look at one recipe online: http://northernwoodlands.org/knots_and_bolts/black-birch-tea might be related to what they mean?

    saison thats not overly saison-ish?

I did a winter and summer brew with WLP566 Belgian Saison II Yeast and the winter one came out fruitier, the summer spicier (I've heard mixed comments on the temperature/fruity/spicy relationship, maybe yeast specific?). Minimal temperature control, heading pad in the winter to keep the temps...

    Kettle has CHARGE!! Help!

Well, the wiring is pretty simple - all that touches the kettle is the element and a temperature probe, right? The probe is not likely to be the issue, especially if it was giving reasonable readings. But I would power it up with a batch of water and wait for it to trip. When it does, remove...

    The sanitary spigot

That is what comes with bottling buckets at my LHBS. I like the store in sanitizer idea! Also I picked up a sprinkler system elbow, barbed on one end, threaded on the other, and cut the barbed end down partway. Then thread it on the back of the valve after the valve is installed on the...

Beer Draft - A new approach to the traditional beer swap

Sounds fun! I wonder if an order that was affected by the number of bottles you have had taken would work as well? Kind of a reward for bring the most popular beer!

    Bulk grain etiquette

Most stores and shops look for ways to entice customers to visit more, because visits often turn into buys. I would think most owners would think of a mill in that way. Last time I was at my LHBS, I had to wait for a brewer from a local brewpub to grind a bucket of grain he brought over...

    Using coffee in beer

Has anyone tried soaking beans in vodka for a tincture approach? I'm wondering about it, and will try soon if no one has. All the spice compounds have different solubility in alcohol than water; I believe that is why most extracts are alcohol based. Wondering about what it will do to coffee...
