Strained or Open Boil Pot Drain

I just moved to a larger pot due to some logistics concerns. My previous 15g pot setup had a homemade stainless steel cage surrounding a 1/2" pick up tube that worked well. My new pot (26g) setup with the existing cage leaves behind way too much wort, possibly because of the angle of the tube...

    How to clean aeration stone

How do/should you clean an aeration stone after using it in wort? I generally just wash it in running water and push a little o2 through it then let it dry. Should I use a cleaner or boil it? thanks

    Ale Yeast in Lager Recipe

Does anyone use ale yeasts with lager recipes? I have a Kirin recipe that I am thinking of using S-05 with, but am not sure what I may end up with. I would ferment at S-05 temps. Any idea of what the results will be?

    Plumbing Sanitation Question

I'm about to put together a plastic conical fermentator I'm getting from US Plastics. My idea is to bring the drain valve out horizontally. To do so I'll use a 2" nipple, 2" elbow, 2 to 1" reducer, 1" nipple, 1" ss ball valve, and a 1 to 1/2" barbed fitting. The parts in between the tank and...

    US Plastics Fermentor

Has anyone built a conical fermentor out of the US Plastics polyethylene mix and fill tank? http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fname=20726&product%5Fid=3863 I'm just about to get a 15g version and build one, but have a couple of questions. 1. I...

    Mash Temp High

I'm brewing a 10g IPA. 12 minutes into the mash I noticed I was mashing at my strike temp 164 instead of 152. I have a recirculation system. I adjusted the temp and all is well for now. Is that too long to not have any adverse affect on the brew?

    Dry Yeast Starter

Is there any reason to make a starter using dry yeast? I don't mean the warm water, 15 minute prior to pitching, but that into a starter to use later. Would it enable a faster fermentation start?

    Fermentation Temp Rise Question

I brewed yesterday and pitched yeast at 72 for an oatmeal stout. Last night it was bubbling, this morning going very well and temp was still around 72. I come home from work this afternoon and the temp has climbed to 78. I am gradually cooling down to try to get down to 68. My question is it...

    Foam Stopper

Has anyone used the foam stopper for fermentation instead of the traditional bubble lock? What is your experience. I have just used one on a starter and it seemed to work ok, but what is the long term (1 week or so) likelyhood of contamination getting in on a 5 gal batch of beer?

    Mash Out Temp/Sparge Temp

What is the difference in the mash out and sparge temp? After mashing for usually 60 minutes, I raise the temp to the sparge setting and start sparging. Where does mash out temp come into play, or does it matter? Promash has this so am I missing something?

    Two Day Brew

I've read of mashing overnight, but can you mash, sparge into your brewpot, then shut down overnight and begin the next day without affecting the beer? That is, start boil the next morning. Just looking at breaking up brew process, if this is doable.

Lube residue on orings after teardown

Does anyone have a suggestion on getting the food grade lub off seals after teardown. I soak all my keg parts in oxyclean and have tried other cleaners, but the seals still have a film of the lubricant on them. I've used them like that by rewashing and sanitizing and have had no detectible...

    Keg/Carboy Wash Tube

I'm looking for a how-to guide on building a keg or carboy wash tube. I've seen them before but can't find anything now. I'd like to hook it up to a small pump and recycle cleaning fluid through the tube. It would stand up in an inverted keg with a spinning nozzle(s) to continuously spray the...

    Drilling Plastic Fermenters

I've been using glass for a while and am looking into lighter fermenters. I can find 7. something gallon fermentors but then don't have holes for a drain/transfer valve. Can I drill out plastic (carefully with a step type bit) and minimize risk of contamination? What's the difference between...

    Aquarium Sealant in mashtun

I just put together a mashtun from an old plastic cooler. I've got a small seepage around a rubber stopper I'm using to support a sight gauge I can't seem to stop. I am reluctant to use any sealant but don't want wort getting in between the cooler. I have some aquarium sealant but don't know...

    Spotted Keg

I've got a old keg that has a few spots, like rust stains inside on the bottom. It had been stored in the attic with no lid on and might have gotten some salt water in it. I've scrubbed it a few times with various cleaners but the spots are still there. Question is, can I use this or is there...

CO2 Bottle and Gage in Kegerator

I'm building a kegerator out of a small chest freezer and considering wheter or not to put the gas equipment inside the chest. I know it's done but seems like the moisture and temp would be hard on the gage. My pros and cons are, if on the inside it is a cleaner looking setup but the con is...
