    bagel hack

Nothing like a true fresh bagel. Sadly too many bagel shops now use frozen bagels to cut costs. Don't be fooled by the bagel boil pot and oven in view of the kitchen, may look fresh, but unless that are making their own dough, those frozen ones, while tasty, lack the subtle perfection of...

    Modelo?

fwiw, I brewed a Negra Model (dark Mexican Lager) clone based on the recipe in CloneBrews Book (Tess and Mark Szamatulski ) last year (in anticipation of Cinco de Mayao) as my first true lager home brew. I liked it.

    Modelo?

I don't get the love affair with Especial, it's very plain jane to me. I'm with you with the Negra which is more akin to what mexican lagers (ie viennas ) are all about. Plus it pairs better with chiles and other herbs and spices in mexican food.

    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

A little back story, Long Island does not have much of a slow and low BBQ history, but not long ago, Smokin Al's figured out how to appease the fire marshalls and health inspectors to overcome their unmerciful regulations and opened LIs first true BBQ restaurant. While we now have many very...

    Which Software to pay for?

I switched from Beer Smith to BrewFather a few years ago and haven't look back . I kept my Beer Smith subscription current until I was convinced BrewFather was for me . They are both good, the deciding factor however was at the time, Brewfather being newer and cloud based was seamless...

Equally Obnoxious Hockey Trash Talk Thread, eh?

The real season begins. LGR! @day_trippr , ESPN seems to like the Maple Leafs as the dark horse upset cup winner. They are split on that first round with the Bruins. In my ideal world , the Rangers breeze past the Caps and then face the Isles in the second round to set up an original...

    Underrated Beer List

I stumbled across a fun article from Gear Patrol in my news feed this morning, 15 Underrated Beers as polled by 15 brewers. Curious to see what these brewers would come up with and the premise was to name old line beers worthy of distinction in today’s hype focused beer market. A few that...

Where to post questions about fermented cucumbers (pickles)?

+1 on RO water (rodi) Since they ferment it's like beer, keep them fermenting until you like them and then put in clean jars into the fridge to slow things down. I use 3% salt solution but that is a personal choice. I go by weight because I have the scale for brewing

    S-23 Lager Yeast Educate Me

If you haven't done so, Fermintis has write ups on their website to help you with selection. 23 is described for fruity hoppy lagers. 34/70 is for strong robust neutral beers and they release a new 30 they say reveals the esters in lagers. i only have experience with 34/70 so i can't...

Enjoying it for now. The team is flawed but finding a way to win, especially late in games. I'm hoping the return of the key players and development of Rempe gets them playoff ready. LGR.

    Water questions...pH & TDS?

What are you using to measure pH, and what temp? Since I have a saltwater reef tank, I have a rodi unit (i.e., deionizing membrane) that scrubs it down to 0 TDS. Most units can be expanded. Also, it's debatable, but there are arguments about removing chlorine vs. chloramine and what filter the...

    How much priming sugar?

temperature is only needed to account for CO2 already in the beer. Theoretically, some minute amount if dissolved CO2 could be afffected by bottle temperature when packaging, but I doubt it would make a material difference.

    Fermenter buckets lid

See if you can find a gasket for the lid, Also, you can use a food grade lubricant to help seal the lid as it will fill in any small gaps.

Beer Gas (25/75) Nassau County NY

+1 on General Welding. That is where I get my CO2 and they will fill your own tank and not do that swap tank thing. They fill my 5lb CO2 tank while I wait. It might be a different policy for other tanks, or I could have been lucky when I came in.

    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

100% sure. Been through a long list of troubleshooting. SG/Plato issue was one of the first things I looked into. I tried different decimal lengths, retaliated a dozen times, and so forth. I don't stress out about numbers, efficiency, etc. Out of curiosity, I picked up a Tilt, and it...
