Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

Sorry for the late response. Yes it does read the correct boiling temperature for my elevation.

Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

Thanks for all the input. Next time I brew I will check the FG of the TILT against my refractometer as a test.

Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

Bobby, I am actually using your eBIAB kit with probe and an Auber Cube. Maybe I should send it back for a refund... ;) I have two TILTs and they both report lower than expected FG, so I don't think that is the issue.

Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

A lot of my recipes recently are from clone books with FG listed, of from BeerSmith.

Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I use a refractometer while brewing, but then swap to a TILT in the fermenter. So my OG and FG are basically taken from the same source (TILT).

Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

Grain bill is around 15-17lb. Yeast normally Safale 04 or 05. Mash temp 152-154. Mash time 60-90 mins. Fermentation temps start at 68 go up to 72.

Lower Than Expected FG - But OG is Correct

I have been brewing for almost 2 years so still consider myself a noob and learning. I BIAB, use Brewsmith software and TILT's to measure gravity. As I BIAB I have a brewhouse efficiency of about 70% so manipulate the amount of grain used to give me the correct OG. However I quite often find...

    Identifying cause of bad taste

I am normally at the 1.070og level, so I think for my style of beers that may not work as I am in the 15lb-17lb area and BIAB in a 15 gallon kettle. But I will give it a go with a lower gravity beer at some point. Thanks for the advice :-)

    Identifying cause of bad taste

I have never done a partial boil on AG. Does the reduced water make the mash thick?

    Identifying cause of bad taste

I used to do the same thing and had a few fermentors turn into a quatermass experiment and ruin the beer. I have learned that patience can be a virtue. I live in Arizona and the cold water temperature here in the summer is hot enough to shower in, so its hard to get the wort cool. I had read all...

    Made My First Raw Beer.....

Yes I agree it's the yeast. Mine is not as bad as that it was a branded Kveik, so it's drinkable. But it's a one glass night beer before moving on to something else. It's got one of those 'not sure if I like it' tastes, but temps you to keep trying.....

    Made My First Raw Beer.....

Further to this. I remember when I first tasted it, it reminded me of an Imperial Blonde that I made using a lot of honey. It was strong and has a sweetness to it.

    Made My First Raw Beer.....

I used this one Recipe: Bygland For the Love of Kveik I think the taste is down to the yeast as it had the same smell when first adding it to beer wort. I am sure others who have used Kviek Honindal might be able to better describe it. Best I can say it is almost borders on an off taste, but...

    Made My First Raw Beer.....

Made my first raw beer a few weeks ago as an experiment using Hornindal Kviek. I have to say it's an acquired taste. But it does grow on you.....

    Identifying cause of bad taste

I know you said you practiced good standards for cleanliness, but if all your beers were bad, my guess would be that you didn't get that part quite right.

    Spike Trio...15g or 20g help

I am a semi-newbie so take from this what you will. I have a 15 gallon Spike Kettle for BIAB. As its 16" wide I find you need to leave a reasonable amount of wert/trub in the bottom or it sucks up all the crap extracting it, so I regularly use c8-9 gallons of water (with adjusted recipe). I...

Are Beersmith Normally So Slow To Respond?

That's why I am surprised they don't link the software account the forum. Would seem sensible. I also sent a contact form to them but didn't get a response, but I can appreciate people are very busy, so I will just wait it out. It's a shame that some companies don't realise the damage it does...
