    iSpindel Review

Yup, it will be interesting to see how things go long term. I've actually read how they've worked great first couple uses, then fart out for some reason. I do plan on writing follow up reviews as I continue using them.

    iSpindel Review

Decided to post the review I did for our club on the iSpindel. Please note that this is not a deep dive on the nitty gritty of build, setup, or the minute details of the app I chose. This is merely a general overview. SPOILER - I liked it so much I purchased a second unit! iSpindel Review...

How much headspace is too little

I personally wouldn't divide the batch or use less water. I would probably just roll with it as is. Do you have a blow off tube on your fermenter? Or is it a spunding valve?? If it's a blowoff - I definitely wouldn't worry as any excess krausen would just spill out through the blowoff tube. But...

What I did for beer today

Currently brewing up my extract Cream Ale. Switched the hops from Liberty to German Hallertau Mittelfruh on this batch and can't wait to see how it comes out. Cheers!

How Fix LOTS of Condensation on Range Hood?

Great job! The biggest thing I learned was to have a fan powerful enough to yank that steam into the duct BEFORE it has a chance to condense. And that's exactly what you did with that inline fan.

    TSP-PF (Phosphate Free)

I think I flubbed my question. Regular TSP is not available. Red Devil TSP/90 is not available. All that was available was TSP-PF - that's what I used. Doesn't really matter anyway, I mixed it up and it seems to work great. Carry on!

    TSP-PF (Phosphate Free)

So I just mixed up my first batch of DIY brewery wash. All of the recipes I found called for Red Devil TSP/90. Problem is: I couldn't find that anywhere. Not online, Not on Amazon, and absolutely nowhere locally. I ended up just using TSP-PF (Phosphate Free). I understand that the original TSP...

I haven't sanitized my conical in over a year.

I absolutely love this! I love that you are challenging conventional wisdom and practices! To boot, you are making beer that you love and your process is working for you! When I first began brewing, I was very much stuck in the "old ways". After a number of years I realized I was killing my own...

Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

I banned glass vessels from my home brewery about 4 year ago. I almost had one of these horror stories and realized there was no reason to use glass carboys in an age when we have so many other safer and more convenient options.

    Spunding valve talk

That's a really good question. I don't have any experience with the BlowTie so I couldn't confirm or deny that. But, it's price point is definitely tempting!! To add to this, I've also recently discovered this guy: $14.99 at Morebeer...

my beer wont clear in the fermenter

I don't think failure to drop is a sign of infection. Yes, it's possible infected beer can be cloudy, but it doesn't mean cloudy beer is infected. This thread shows how many options you have to allow beer to clear: Gelatin, Clarityferm, and good old father time, as hotbeer suggested. You'll...

    Spunding valve talk

I've been regularly using the SPUNDit and love it. It's incredibly reliable and has fine tune adjustments. They are sold on ebay and possibly even Amazon now. They are made by a homebrewer named Trong Nguyen who is also a bit of an engineer/inventor. Also, I love that you are going to ferment...

my beer wont clear in the fermenter

Gelatin will most likely clear you up. Anytime I brew up my pils, I always add clarityferm the same time I pitch my yeast. I always end up with amazingly clear beer and it allows me to skip the gelatin step later on. Just something to think about on future batches.

    Why do people Quit brewing?

I tend to go through these lulls in brewing every now and then. Anywhere from 6-8 months or so. Usually it's a time issue, but most recently I had ruptured my Achilles in March. I wasn't able to brew again until about October! Now I'm back at it and have a few beers in the pipeline. I imagine...

    Hop spider or not?

I no longer use a hop spider. As others have said, I've found that it mutes hop character. If I have a heavy hop schedule during a boil, then I just tilt my AIO back during cooling to help a majority of the particulate settle to the back of my AIO. Works great. I most recently also nixed using...

tilting the FV with an air wedge

I love this!!! I do this with my Anvil 6.5 on brew day. Right before I turn on the chiller, I pump it up and tilt my kettle back. This helps a majority of the trub to settle to the back of the kettle during chilling. It works great!!! I'm so glad to see someone else putting one of these to the...

    Glycol Temps, whats yours?

My glycol chiller is a converted dorm fridge. When I ferment, I keep my glycol at around 22 - 24f. Once done, and if I'm not planning on fermenting for a number of weeks, I will unplug the fridge and prop the door open - this allows air flow into and out of the fridge, which also inhibits mold...

How Fix LOTS of Condensation on Range Hood?

I also struggled with condensation at one point. I had installed a bathroom fan in my brewcave mistakenly thinking this would be more than adequate. Of course, it wasn't. I had water dripping from all the pipes, ceiling, you name it. Then I came across a picture of someone who used semi-rigid...

Who else uses 34/70 on the regular?

I only use dry yeast and always direct pitch. 34/70 is my go to yeast for my bohemian pilz. Currently have a bo pilz fermenting away with 34/70 as I type. I also ferment this yeast at 60 degrees and just keep it there till kegging day. Has always been a great workhorse for me and I've loved the...
