    Spruce Beer

When a blue spruce at my parent's house was pushing new growth this spring, I decided to pluck a bunch of growth off for brewing. A week or so later, I picked up a generic pislner kit at the LHBS. I pretty much added about 4 oz of fresh spruce tips to the boil. I didn't/don't have the means...

    Primary idea

The inside is smooth. The container is intended to be a biological filter, and is currently filled with "biomedia" which are plastic pieces about the size of a tennis ball, with a large amount of surface area, but the container itself is smooth inside and out.

    Primary idea

Unfortunately, the holes are not threaded for me, but a 1" PVC fitting with threads DOES fit quite nicely. I figure if I get some sort of grommet to seal it off, I'll be good to go.

    Primary idea

I was thinking a PVC 90 elbow, with male threads on one side. I figured I could fit a stopper into the other end, and put my airlock in there. Think I could place another elbow on the inside with a standpipe of sorts up closer to the top? That would leg gasses escape as well, and allow for...

    Primary idea

It's the same grade of plastic as the plastic primary I am currently using. I have thought about putting a faucet valve in for racking. Does anyone see problems with putting the airlock off to one side, as opposed to being in the center of the lid? I guess I could drill a hole in the lid...

    Primary idea

I am looking for opinions on the viability of this as a 2nd primary fermentor. We have them on clearance at work, and since beginning brewing, it clicked that I might be able to use this for a larger primary. I have calculated a 10 gal. capacity based on my measurements, but am looking for...

    Dark Stout

Thanks t1master. Unfortunately, all I have is a plastic "Ale Pail" type primary, and no glass carboys yet, but it may be time to invest ;) I wish my primary was glass as well, as the curiousity gets to me often, but this one, I think I'll wait out. Do you find a secondary...

    Dark Stout

Does it sound like it will turn out alright? In my beginning stages still, I just am enjoying experimenting, but I combined several recipes to achieve that one. With my initial gravity of 1.080, and an anticipated gravity of 1.02 or so, should my dry yeast be able to handle approx 8%/volume...

    Dark Stout

I brewed some sort of hybrid last night, not quite sure what style I would place it in, but looks good so far. Did a mini-mash with the specialty grains. 6Gal into the fermentor. Began with a Munton's Imperial Stout Kit 6.6# Dark Malt Extract (from kit, unfortunately, and hopped, as well)...

    Culligan bottles

Does anyone use the 5-Gallon "Culligan" type water bottles for a secondary (or primary)? I know that they are more permeable to oxygen, more prone to scratching, etc, but I have a friend that will give me 4 or 5 if I want them, and it seems like they would work with proper stopper ant airlock...

    Jalapeño Beer

Thanks! I had never heard of or thought of using that trick, but it sounds like a good plan. I have never been one to shy away from the hops, but what alpha% would you recommend? The only hops that I have used thus far have been Columbus, Nugget, and Fuggles.

    Jalapeño Beer

The only reason I used so much corn sugar was based on the advice of the LHBS. And, by the way, it has a VERY cidery taste! From now on, it's only malt extract/specialty grains (until I start with AG) I may have not been too clear, as the pepper beer is really the only drinkable beer I have...

    Jalapeño Beer

I recently began brewing, and wanted to do something with peppers as well. For my initial batch (1st ever) I had a Munton's Ale (of some sort, notes are at home) Kit. At the recommendation of the LHBS, I simply added cleaned Serrano Chile peppers, slit down the side, at bottling time. One...
