Did I get some dead yeast?

It's a fairly high gravity beer and Beersmith is suggesting 2 pkgs. of yeast if no starter, so I figured I'd spin it in the stir plate. I typically use liquid yeast and I'm used to a little activity while in the starter. I see no movement in this.

Did I get some dead yeast?

So, last night I made a yeast starter for today, .6L of water, 2.5 oz. of DME, and a pack of Safale US-05. Let the stir plate run all night and this morning I have a murky solution that seems to have no activity whatsoever. Should I start over with a new pack of yeast or should I pitch what I have?

    Empty 20 lb. CO2 tank - $80

The last hydro stamp is 9/08. I don't know how old it is, as I got it from a friend a couple of years ago. He worked in the beverage industry years ago and had a couple sitting around he was getting rid of. Edit: looks like the first hydro date was in '87 UPS ground to Milwaukee is about $18

Do i have to rehydrate nottingham yeast?

I feel it has to do with how fast you want it to go to work. I like to rehydrate and mix with 2 cups of H2O and 1/2 cup of light malt extract, mix on the stir plate for 24 hours and pitch in full activity so that the amount of time that the wort sits at temperatures susceptible to invasion by...

    Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA Recipe

Fdemt, I never got around to brewing this. I'm in the middle of upgrading my setup and haven't welded the tabs on my burner that are required to hold my new keggle up. Once Finals is over(this week), I hope to get back on the ball. Jbot

    Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA Recipe

I agree...we need a recipe. This is in my top 5 favorite beers. Here's a recipe I found on brew-it-yourself.co.uk... Thinking about trying it this weekend, but what's "whirlfloc"? -Jbot

    Hmmm...most curious

All the other bottles are crystal clear... but, I think we've figured it out. A friend of mine was over last night, he's not much of a brewer, but he is a classically trained chef...he thought they were the remains of fruit fly pupa that had hatched there long ago (these bottles haven't been...

    Hmmm...most curious

Good point... Boiled for 10 minutes in H2O Only the single chilled one. I'm chilling another right now. The half gallon jugs (stilled) are crystal clear, but room temp. Cleaned, blasted with bottle washer and dipped in a strong, hot bleach solution for 30 minutes, rinsed, dryed for maybe...

    Hmmm...most curious

I really don't think so, seeing how there's not a single other bottle with them in it. Besides, what can live in 13% alchohol? It's driving me nuts, though. But, I'm still going to open it and try it. Hey, I should chill another bottle and see if they come up. Jbot

    Hmmm...most curious

So....I made a mead about 8 weeks ago, fermented to completion, yada yada... When I bottled, I filled 5 half gallon jugs with stilled mead and bottled a case of 12oz. bottles after mixing with the appropriate amount of boiled corn sugar. Here comes the mystery...I chilled one bottle of...

WTF: Help me understand this recent cultural phenomena

So, I just found this thread...and clicked to read the pathetic blog mentioned on page 1. Low and behold, and I quote: "I recently checked out how some people are checking out my lovely blog and found two sites whose names i will not mention posted the link and started bashing me. they...

    My first all grain...

Well, I had to break it into two 3 gal. batches for the stove top. That's a 5 gal pot. I'm having a hard time finding a 10 gal pot locally...even at the Liquor Barn (local Disneyland-like liquor store that has home brew equipment). Soon as I can bring myself to drop the $ I'll be boiling on...

    My first all grain...

Well, here it is for your veiwing pleasure...my first all grain. It's as close to a ESB clone as I could find. 12lbs. of grain and lots of hops. Being my first grain beer, there were plenty of moments where I didn't know if it was even close to where I needed to be, but it came out dead on...
