The plastic bucket is the most basic and common primary fermenter used in home brewing. Mainly because of the size of the bucket which are from 6-7.5 gallons. With this size a blow off tube is usually not necessary. They are easier to clean than a carboy but the user most use caution while cleaning to make sure that scratches do not form. Another benefit of the plastic bucket is that it is opaque, in which the brewer does not have to worry about light getting into the fermenter. The plastic used in the making of these buckets is oxygen permeable meaning that longer term storage in a bucket should not be done.
