A vertical tasting is a tasting of a flight of beer. wine, mead or any other fermented beverage made with the same or similar ingredients and techniques but at different times. For example, a vertical tasting of wine often includes examples of the same style of wine from the same winery from different vintages.
When the individual samples that make up a vertical tasting flight are identical, as with beers brewed with identical ingredients and processes in different years, it allows the taster to follow the effect of aging on the finished product.
