- Super juicy, light but satisfying body and smooth bitterness
I wanted to brew this beer for two reason, one to see if I could and two because I had a party coming up and like so many recipes, this was based on necessity!
Efficiency: 70%
Ingredients:
6 lbs US 2-row malt
2 lbs white wheat malt
2 lbs flaked oats
4 oz Crystal 120L
4 oz lactose
1 oz Centennial hops (60 minutes)
1 oz Mosaic hops (whirlpool)
1 oz Citra hops (whirlpool)
1 oz El Dorado hops (whirlpool)
1 oz Citra hops (Dry Hop, 3 days)
1 oz El Dorado hops (Dry Hop, 3 days)
1 tsp yeast nutrient
1 tsp Irish moss
2 pkg Safale-04
Target Mash Temperature: 148F for 60 minutes
Boil/Hop Schedule:
60 mins - 1 oz Centennial
15 mins - 1 tsp Irish moss
10 mins - 4oz lactose & nutrient
0 mins - Flameout & cool wort to 165F
@ 165F - Add the "whirlpool" hops. Since I don't have a whirpool this just means adding them once the wort hits 165F and keeping it there for 20 minutes.
-20 mins - Chill/transfer/pitch
Day 5: Dry Hop during fermentation for a nice bit of biotransformation
Day 8: Transfer and keg (no cold crash)
Day 8-9: 24hrs carbing at 30PSI
Day 9-12: Carb at serving pressure
I decided to pitch two packs of S04 instead of using a starter, as I find dry yeast best added as such and know many professional breweries use this method. Next time I'll try with just one pack but I didn't want to risk it with my very limited time frame!
The yeast flocculates nicely and left me with a clean beer with nice NE style haze, not murk. The taste was pleasantly spot on for what I was shooting for. Crushable, soft bitterness, touch of smooth lactose that accentuates the 120L and hops so nicely into a super juicy sessionable beer.
Would love some feedback if anyone brews this or has thoughts on the methods/ingredients! Silly glamour shot over here.
