The easiest and cheapest mush tun ever

I don't know if anybody already used a bottling bucket spigot in building a mash tun, but I thought this was extremely easy and cheap to build. 1. Home Depot 5 gal cooler: $21.95, Home Depot 2. Bottling bucket spigot: $3.95, LHBS 3. 3/4 inch ss Water Heater Connector Line: $7.95, Home Depot 4...

    Splitting a batch IPA/BIPA

My plan is to attempt to brew a 10 gal split batch IPA / Belgian IPA. The recipe for the IPA is quite simple, "classic" IPA with some 2-row, light crystal and CaraPils, and a bunch of American hops. The difference is that I'm going to split the batch into 2 fermentors and the "AIPA" side will...

As the Oscar fever is approaching upon the media, I decided to start my own Oscars: the Oscars Of Home Brewing Videos. These videos aren't only from the past year, they are more like "Lifetime Achievements of Brewing Videos": Here is my list: 1. Easy All Grain Brewing by Don Osborne - Batch...

    Late hopping in no-chill?

So I'm a lazy bum. That's why I'm thinking of doing a no-sparge and no-chill brew. Basically I just want to leave the hot brew outside overnight and rack it into the fermenter the next morning. Here is where I got some questions: how to do late hopping in no-chill? I think I would pitch the late...

Dark malts: at the beginning or the end of the mash?

Do you guys usually throw in your black or chocolate malts or roasted barley at the beginning of the mash, I mean like together with the base malt, or at the end of mash time / or sparge?

    Brew Dogs on Esquire TV

If there are other threads about it, please merge this one. I used the HBT search engine before posting and found nothing. Guys from the BrewDog brewery from Scotland got a new show on Esquire TV. They will be traveling through the US micro breweries tasting and brewing beer. I think they...

CBS News: "Man becomes drunk when stomach turns into brewery"

"Beer belly: Man becomes drunk when stomach turns into brewery" Is it possible? They claim a man is making alcohol in his stomach! It seams like a crazy fake story, but it was put out by the CBS News. I thought they are a "real news" organization. I have double checked the date on the story...

Priming, dry-hopping and using gelatin in kegs

I just wanted to share with you guys my system for priming, dry-hopping and using gelatin in kegs. Priming in a keg: I use flat 1/3 of a cup = 2.5 oz. = 70g of table sugar (not priming sugar) per keg. Dry hopping in a keg: use whole hops only (pellets don't work in a keg), in a large 5...

What kind of a Home Brewer are you?

    1. The Engineer likes to build spectacular brewing systems, RIMS, BRUTUS, all computerized, etc. Sometimes, the Engineer loves to build his brewing system more then brewing itself, and once the system is build, his love for Home Brewing kind of fades away... and the Engineer is stuck with a...

How long to boil an AG yeast starter?

So usually I make 1 gal starters for my 10 gal batches. I want to start making All Grain yeast starters to save some cash. Here is the question: do I still have to boil the wort for 60 min, if I don't care for IBU's and hop utilization? Won't the wort be sterilized enough after only 10-20 min boil?

Getting fresh hops in April from AU/NZ?

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a hop harvesting season in the Southern Hemisphere just about now (in April, am I right?) I just wonder if there is something similar to HopsDirect.com in AU/NZ? I wouldn't mind to get some fresh Australian/NZ hops in balk in April... :)

    My BRY-97 vs. US-05 experiment

I have brewed a 10 gal batch of IPA and put it into two 5 gal fermenters. In one of them I pitched BRY-97 in the other one US-05. Both yeast were dehydrated and pitched in a standard way. US-05 started fermenting two hours after pitching. Bry-97 took 2 days (48 hours!) to show first signs of...

Re-using hops from dry hopping as bittering hops for the next batch?

Just recently I've heard about this new (well, new to me) technique. You basically re-use hops from dry-hopping in one batch, as your bittering hops in the boil for the next batch. Have you guys heard anything like this before? And how would you calculate IBUs for the "re-used" hops? Is it a...

    10 HBU's = how many IBU's?

This is NOT a political discussion, so all the trolls get the hell out. Obama's WH Honey Porter Recipe calls for "10 HBUs bittering hops". How many IBU's is 10 HBU's?

    Brewing Word Game

The rules are simple. We only use words somehow connected with brewing and/or beer. You can use beer names, beer styles, brewery names, famous brewers names, etc, etc. Feel free to improvise. Every next word starts with the last letter of the previous word. If you use a two-word fraise or a...
