    Low Gravity and ABV

Like most things in my life, I feel I’m over complicating this. In the end, my beer tastes great, so why am I so concerned about achieving numbers and efficiency? It’s just the way I’m wired. Everything was going fine until I started playing with these online calculators. I agree with you...

    Low Gravity and ABV

Did a BIAB this weekend. Finely crushed the grains using an Oster kitchen thing… Borderline flour looking with husks mixed in. I followed the strike amount/temps exactly as Brew in a Bag (BIAB) Calculator ~ said. Two things that were off. My target fermenter wort was 5 gallons but ended with...

    Low Gravity and ABV

The consensus is to get a finer milled grain for BIAB. One-time, MB.com forgot to mill the grains so I ended up using a handheld blender with the blade on the bottom. I thought I was chopping it too fine, but maybe this was best. Next batch I’ll try the handheld and I’ve ordered a digital PH...

    Low Gravity and ABV

Got this response about crushing the grains. The warehouse is not able to double crush our grains. The Grain Mill at the warehouse is set to 0.067

    Low Gravity and ABV

It defaults to 75% efficiency, so I leave it at that.

    Low Gravity and ABV

Thanks for all the feedback. Corn sugar always goes into the boil, not the mash. Only reason I add this is to get the ABV up. I like the beer from 5.5-6.5%. Past experience has taught me how much to add based on my grain amount, but if I can get the efficiency correct, I won’t need the sugar...

    Low Gravity and ABV

Been doing the BIAB for a few years now, but just kind of winged it making up recipes and not really calculating target numbers and so on. Last several batches, I’ve been using www.brewersfriend.com to calculate my target OG and FG. Every batch I’ve done doing this my numbers are much lower. I’m...

    BIAB basket size

Sorry for getting back to this late, but I posted a reply last week, but don’t see it… I’m using some cheap brew bags from Amazon with nothing but a draw string. I’ll consider upgrading a bag with the straps. @terrypratt1 – You mentioned you use a brew bucket, I assume this is plastic. Is it...

    BIAB basket size

I’ve been brewing 5 gallon batches for a while using biab in a 10 gallon pot. I started using a pulley system to drain the bag but it looks like a lot of stress on the bag/string and looks like it’s going to give out soon. I was thinking of buying a stock pot strainer basket and putting the bag...

Low ABV at the end of Fermentation

Thanks for the feedback from all. I’ll try to answer all with this. First, this was my grain list (in lbs) Amount Name 15.25 Pale malt (2-row) 1.75 Roasted Barley 3.3 Flaked Oats 0.67 Chocolate Malt 1 Dark Crystal Mash was 165 deg starting temp. At the end of the hour, I measure the mash...

Low ABV at the end of Fermentation

I’ve been all grain brewing for about 8 batches now. The last few I’ve noticed had a low ABV. I didn’t take Hydrometer readings, but can tell you after 6 tall glasses, you feel nothing. So anyway, I’ve been doing the hydrometer readings on my last few and up to now, getting what I expected...

Cane Sugar for a 5 gallon Keg

Good advice on the siphoning. This weekend I kegged a Nut Brown Ale and removed the funnel/strainer. Let the hose sit on the bottom of the keg and fill upward (soft sisphon). There was no foam. Will continue to do this method.

Cane Sugar for a 5 gallon Keg

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but searched and can’t find a solid answer. I’ve been kegging (5 gallons) from day 1 and want to try to carbonate with sugar since I only have 1 CO2 tank and have started to increase my brewing schedule and don’t want to wait for the force carbonation...
