I brewed an Oatmeal Stout yesterday, using 12 lbs of grain. I have a 30 qt brewpot and extracted 6.5 gallons of wort... the problem #1 is that I need a larger mash tun for bigger beers, the OTHER issue is that my brewpot is too small! My final runnings were still at 1.018... even after that, I still had an efficiency of 77%. Can you imagine if I had run off nearly 7.5 gallons??? WOW!

I need at least a 40qt pot and a 10 gallon cooler for my 5 gallon brews... I learned my lesson.

I have the same issue as you my friend.

Maybe I'll try mashing some Viagra and then boiling the runnings. Maybe my mashtun and kettle will get bigger. :)

I never encountered a brew where I did not have enough room to run out the sugars... until my stout... it took over an hour to lauter 6.5 gallons as it was!!!!

Yeah...well...couldn't you just strain more runnings into another kettle and boil it, sans hops, for awhile, alongside the rest of the runnings, and just boil out alot of the water? A big PITA, but, yeah...this is why I rarely do AG.

Yeah--any of the gyrations one might go through to compensate for not having a amply sized brewpot are a big PITA. That's one really nice thing about brewing 5-6 gal AG batches in a keggle--aside from the initial hot break, you really don't have to be concerned much at all about boilovers. That leaves you free to clean up the mashtun, get out gear you'll need, prepare hops, etc, in a much more relaxed fashion.
