Having trouble coming up with a name for your latest brew? Here are some obsolete job titles that you might consider.
Can you suggest a beer style for each one?
Gandy Dancer – Railroad trains slowly push the tracks out of alignment on curves, and teams of gandy dancers with long iron poles would all heave-ho to push them back. Hard work in the hot sun.
Printer's Devil – Printers’ assistants were called “devils” because they got the dirty jobs cleaning up the type and presses and got black ink all over them.
Elevator Operator – There are only a few places in the world which still use them. The job definitely has its “ups and downs”.
Gas Jockey – (not available in NJ or OR). Service station attendants used to fill your tank, wash your windshield, and check your oil. That’s why they called them “service stations”.
Pole Climber – Telephone poles used to have spikes in them so the electric/phone "linemen" could climb them. Now they use bucket trucks.
Lamplighter – Before electricity was common, someone had to light the natural gas streetlights in the evening, and turn them off in the morning.
Fuller Brush Man – If you remember President Eisenhower, you’ll remember the door-to-door Fuller Brush salesman.
Of course, there's also Honest Politician, but nobody's ever been able to brew that one.
