    Warm Temperature Fermentation Yeast

OK - I understand that generally lower temps (65-72) are best for ales, and most of my last 10-15 batches have all been temp controlled in a dedicated fridge, and wish I could stay temp controlled. This summer, I probably won't have that option, as we have been using the spare as overflow, and...

    Marynka info?

I have only used it once - came in the Baltic Porter kit form Austin Homebrew I brewed about 2 years ago, so I can't give a real accurate comparison. Saaz is the signature hop in Pilsner Urquell, if you need a reference point. It is not the exact same hop, but is close and maybe just more...

Smaller batch in 5 gallon primary?

I have done many 3.5-4 gallon batches in both my 5gal carboy and 5gal buckets. Works great, and you get a better pitching rate from a vial or pack of yeast if you don't do a starter. Some brewing software is a major help scaling down, or you can take a take a 5gal recipe (or kit) and make a...

Tonight I'm Gonna Parti (gyle) Like It's 1699

I am planning on partigyle pumpernickle rye imperial stout hopefully next weekend. Using a 10gal rubbermaid cooler with about 21 lbs grain producing 4 gal of 1.080 first runnings (to which I will add some molasses and sugar to bump up) (to fit in a 5gal ferment bucket) with second runnings...

What kind of tie knot do you use?

I prefer windsor, but some of my ties with thicker batting only get a half.

Want to buy a Refractometer - have questions

I bought a 0-32% refractometer from this seller, only took about a week to arrive from Hong Kong, but took about 4 days to ship (per his policy). I have not brewed with it, but have tested some different juices in the fridge - super easy to use, and for $24 delivered, seems like a great deal...

Step mashing in an Igloo ?.....

I have done several step mashes in my igloo. Start with a fairly thick mash (.75 - 1 qt per pound), and reduce your sparge water a little if you have to. Play with the mash calculator tool mentioned above, keeping notes on total water added. Takes some fiddling, but works. If you want a...

    watering hops

If you have fish alive in your aquarium (as opposed to a vegan aquarium), the nutrient levels in the water should not hurt any plants. They would injure or kill the fish before plants. However, if you keep African cichlids with appropriate hard water, don't use this on your plants too much...

    Spent yeast for bread making!!!

Besides just using the spent grain - which is wonderful in bread, instead of using water for the bread, use wort from the end of the mash. I made a mild two weeks ago, and here is the approximate recipe: 2tsp dry yeast (I use bulk bread yeast) 1c whole wheat flour 6c white flour 2c final...

Favorite Beer you buy to save the bottles?

My favs are Trader Joe's beers made by Gordon Biersch, as well as GB beers(particularly their WinterBock). Lables come off quite easy, and no imprints for sending to comps, and damn good beer inside. I miss my Yuengling pint returnables I had while back in college - 16 oz beats 12 oz anyday...

I'm all about supporting the LHBS...

I have a small but decent LHBS nearby, but their hours suck. M-F 10-4, Sat 9-4, closed Sun. For those of us that have normal M-F 8-5 jobs, it is almost impossible to get there.
