Converting a Carboy to a Keg

For the record, passivation isn't a one-shot process. If stainless is left to its own devices in the presence of oxygen, it will passivate on its own. Here's John Palmer's instructions relating to it. Also, for example, if you scrub a plastic container then you can scratch it, and make it...

    Converting Partial Boils to Full

To convert from partial to full boil, just start out with the full amount of water (i.e. 6 gallons or so). Shouldn't be any change in recipe formulation. You could play around with late extract additions, but that's not even necessary. Also, your link is to all of the Northern Brewer kits, is...

can you use Lavlin yeast for Apfelwein?

no, people use whatever yeast they have around. I think next batch I'll use a hefeweizen yeast. Check the huge Apfelwein thread for all the different options.

    Michigan must try beers.

I'll second Arbor Brewing company. The Sacred Cow IPA and the Olde #22 Alt are two of my favorites. I don't care much for Bell's Oberon (it's the college micro of choice) but they make some good stouts, with the Expedition Stout and Coffee Stout being my favorites there. New Holland makes...

Let's clear something up about Chicago

Any other suggestions on locations to get some real Chicago style beef? Having moved here for school, I tired immediately of the pizza, and don't know where to start for a good beef sandwich.

    Water report

Suggest reading (and rereading again at least 2 more times to understand) the Palmer section about water http://www.howtobrew.com/section3/chapter15.html Using Palmer's Nomograph I get a Residual Alkalinity of around 25 ppm CaCO3 That should give you a nice water for most styles. Pilsners and...

    Gelatin Photos

Wouldn't you want that beer to be hazy? I just used gelatin for the first time, threw a dissolved packet of Knox into a corny and racked beer on top of it, chilled down. My cream ale came out crystal/ brilliantly clear. Heard you only need 1/2 packet, so I might try that next time around.

    From Wort to Fermenter

Doesn't really matter, or rather "It depends" You can try to strain if you'd like, it will likely result in less crud in your fermenter. I don't really worry about it, that stuff will typically drop to the bottom anyway, and I just don't rack it off when I'm racking the completed beer into a...

To rehydrate or not to rehydrate? That is the question.

Direct from the EdWort's mouth So no need to rehydrate. It's as easy as he makes it out to be.

    Student loans

Student loans are a necessary evil for me. I've got a considerable amount of them, but I wouldn't have the job I have, or the opportunities I've had without them. It's real ****ty to start off post-school with a big chunk of debt, but if it gets you to where you want to be then it's all worth...

Anyone here a member of Chicago Beer Society

Definitely go. Take your beers. Enjoy your time. Very cool group of guys and highly experienced and influential in the beer world. I took my second beer ever to a CBS meeting and had some of the Siebel instructors drinking my mediocre beer, and they gave me fantastic advice in a helpful...

2007- Huge shakeup with the TDF!

I mean, the race itself isn't a joke. It's an amazing feat of strength, endurance, and determination if done clean and fair. It's the doping crap that ruins it and its image.

    Killer deal on Ventmatic faucets...

I ordered mine on Monday morning, and they showed up on Wednesday. Fast shipping, great price, and quick response to questions. Sounds like the perfect type of business to support to me.

2007- Huge shakeup with the TDF!

It's a bummer seeing what's going on in the sport. Especially since it always seems to come up during the TDF, and when the most people are watching it. Still a great sport, and a decidedly unpopular one in the US, but it sure beats Nextel Cup (or NASCAR or whatever it's called).

    Can Kits?

I helped some friends on their first brew, which was a Coopers "Brewmaster" Wheat beer. I was pleasantly surprised. It's pre-hopped, but you add some DME to it. It was a decent beer, far better than my first beer. I like my extract Hef better and would rather brew that, but if I had one of...
