I’ve spent the last 8 days off-the-grid in a remote boat-access only cabin among the fjords in SE Alaska. Caught LOTS of salmon, some yellow eye rockfish, and Bob hooked a HUGE 150# plus halibut that Bob lost at the boat. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us, and we will never forget it. Plus, we have a cooler of fish to take home!
We’ll be leaving Alaska soon.

And there IS a black bear in that salmon stream in one of the pictures above- just pretty far away.

I am very envious. A trip to remember for a lifetime!

Did you fly up, or drive the Alaska Highway?

We flew into Fairbanks, drove down to Valdez and stayed a night before a friend picked us up on his boat, and drove us an hour and half on his boat. Then, doing the same in reverse. We’re spending some time in Valdez before heading home.

What were y'all using for terminal tackle up there in the 49th state?

Cheers!

Casting #6 vibrax spinners for silver salmon, jigging for rockfish and halibut in deep water. We used 10-12 ounce teardrop jigs for those, on 50# braided line.
We fished mostly off of the boat, but for the best days on the silvers we walked to a stream (where that bear was hanging out), and casted away from the dying pink salmon to the jumping silvers. It was the best time- caught lots and had so much fun!

Too cool!

Used to have some 'buds who'd head up to Alaska each summer for a week of salmon fishing, beer drinking and lies. They'd take a floatplane into places so remote that you'd wonder if any human had ever dipped a line in those waters.

Of course, they were always at risk of encountering Buddy Bear Grizzly, trying to fatten up before his long Winter's nap. Accordingly they all came prepared with large calibre/high load side arms for protection in case encounters got life threatening. When they met their guide dockside at the floatplane, he asked them what they were packin'.

One guy proudly pulls out a 40 cal. Might as well just throw pebbles from the stream. Next guy shows his "Dirty Harry" .44 Magnum. No better than a Daisy BB gun. So they ask the guide what he carried. He unpacked a Smith & Wesson .50 cal cannon. All the city slickers are in awe, ogling this massive weapon, when one of them notices that the barrel sight has been filed off and asked the guide, "Why?"

"Well," he replies, "Actually this won't stop a charging Grizzly. It'll only piss him off. But I filed the sight down smooth so when he takes the gun and shoves it up my ass, it won't hurt so much when I pull it out."

As Jimmy Buffet would say, "Mostly true story."
