Propagating Bread Yeast like Beer Yeast?

I haven't brewed in a while but I remember it being fairly easy to propagate yeast with some malt or honey dissolved in water. Is there any reason you couldn't do the same with bread yeast, since apparently the entire world has decided to buy bread yeast at the same time? I've seen articles that...

Bacteria gunk? Or just yeast waking up?

Sorry, sorry, I promised I'd never post an "Is this infected," but... is it? I'm about to bottle this (or throw it away if it tastes terrible), and here's the deal: It's a lager that's been in the fridge for about 3 months. (This is the same April-zen Oktoberfest that had all kinds of issues...

Uh... Froze my lager in secondary...

So my Sanyo mini-fridge apparently does not have a setting to leave the temps in the mid-30s. You can only go to about 40F, or the mid 20s. I did not know this, and in trying to find the magic mean, I accidentally froze my carboy. Solid. So... what do I do now? Will the beer recover...

    Annotated Brew-Day: Double Decoction

Well, tomorrow is brew day! Our crew's 1st Double-D Beer, and maybe our 4th AG brew overall (numerous partial-mashes done as well over the years). I'm pretty excited about the recipe and the decoction process, so I want to document it here for posterity. Feel free to jump in with...

I didn't dissolve the DME in my starter - am I boned?

Hi all, I made my first yeast starter , but I did something kind of dumb. I didn't really dissolve the DME in the water - I just kind of mixed it into the warm water and shook it, but didn't boil or really heat the water in any way. The yeast is in there now. A) Is this going to work at...

    April-Zen Recipe - Feedback Appreciated!

First brew of the season! A late-blooming Marzen... so, an April-zen! This will be my crew's 3rd all-grain batch, and we've decided we want to try a double-decoction in order to gain access to the pantheon of the brewing gods. Figuring that the decoction will add some caramelly-ness, I've...

    Good beer for a baby?

Ha! Not like that (though I guess we could talk about what beer you'd want to be your kid's first...) Turns out that if all goes well, the ol' Cap'n and his Mate are expecting a little powder monkey (in August, so we've got time to plan and can do a long secondary), and I'm trying to figure...

    Krausen like fluffy clouds...

Had a little lag on my Belgian Dubbel (about 30 hours from pitch to first formation of krausen, I'm guessing), but it seems pretty happy now. Check this out! Usually my krausens are flat and uninteresting but this one looks like what you see out of an airplane window. Apologies for...

    Gemini (Westmalle Dubbel clone- AG)

Ahoy mates! Working off a recipe from Beer Captured, trying to more or less make the Westmalle Dubbel. I read in another thread that the Beer Captured recipe maybe is too much on the sweet/raisiny flavor, so my thought is to up the biscuit slightly and up the hops slightly. Slightly drier...

Would this work as a thermostat for a mini-fridge?

I have one of those small-ish Sanyo mini-fridges that we all get to use for a kegerator, though I've never converted it. I'd like to use it for things like lagering (or, honestly, just to be able to ferment ales at a proper temperature...) Is the Johnson Controls one [This one]the cheapest...

    Aldebaran Scotch Pumpkin/Sweet Potato Ale

Well, the recipe is a little nuts, but that's the kinda beers I make. This'll be my first all-grain! I would appreciate comments greatly. Please note: I couldn't figure out how to add pumpkin, sweet potato, and maple syrup to BeerSmith, so those are not accounted for in the IBUs, the color...

    Drink Beer, Run Better

Don't know if this has hit the board yet, but if not, check out the story here: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/24/nonalcoholic-beer-aids-marathon-recovery/ Granted, there's a lot of conditions attached to this, and we'll have to see whether alcoholic beer has the same effect, and...

    62-quart Igloo as MLT questions

I just picked up what (I hope is) a fantastic MLT option, the Igloo 62-quart cooler. Apparently they have them sometimes at Costco, but info on it is very sparse. (Not sure the Igloo website even lists it... weird). It was $40, I figure I can't really lose. My main question is, do I even...

Dei Gratia Thanksgiving Dubbel - Pumpkin/Sweet Potato Ahoy!

Well, as I say, I'm back on HBT and alive. Those who remember me remember I have a penchant for odd beers (the thinking being, if I love a commercial brew I may as well buy it while I experiment at home). So - every year, I make a pumpkin beer in September. Past styles have included IPAs...

    The Return of Cap'n Jewbeard!

"The autumn wind's a pirate, Blustering in from sea; With a rollicking song, he sweeps along, Swaggering boist'rously." Ahoooooooooy brethren and sistren of the beer-drinkin' coast! It has been indeed a long exile, but now I am returned to you once more! In the time since I'd...

    Dogfish Head 120 Min...

Well, I bought this over a year ago, saving it for my Master's Graduation. That was yesterday, so I drank the beer today. Let me offer up this little video clip as a rough approximation of my reaction. (Sort-of safe for work? I don't know. It's that clip from Scanners - but this is my first...
